Autry National Center Los Angeles
Just opposite the LA Zoo's parking lot stands the Autry National Center which exhibits a lot of works on Western heritage and its influence on the Californian ecology since the early times. Also in the line up is Californian lore that dates back to the war between the Americans and their Mexican neighbors.
The Museum has had arrangements for the expansion of its facilities to make up adequate space to host most of its bank of artifacts. Being among some of the facilities under the Center's administration, the Southwest Museum hosts some of the objects made by the hands of American Indians.
Established in the 2003 after a merger between the Women of the West Museum, the Southwest Museum and the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, the Center's founders include some very illustrious names in American History including Gene Autry and Charles Fletcher Lummis, the latter a photojournalist was the founder of the Southwest Museum of the American Indian. He organized a movement and won support to charter the first free public museum in LA in the year 1907.
