This vast zoo houses 1100 animals with over 250 different species. The zoo gets all the administrative support from the zoo association, better known as the "Greater Los Angeles zoo association", which was created in the year 1963. In the year 2002, the zoo attained the status of Botanical Garden. There are over 800 different plant species and over 7400 individual plants in the facility.

An animal health and conservation center named after the famous philanthropist Robert and Suzanne Gottlieb is underway. Equipped with state of art intensive care unit this center is mainly for the surgical purpose and research activities. Smallest patient treated under this facility was a spider tortoise weighing just 0.08 Kg, and the largest being an elephant with 4826 Kg.

Children under the age of 2 years are granted free admission and adults are changed with $14. There are also discounts available for visiting groups. The zoo also offers guided tours. The general timings of the zoo are 10am to 5 pm. The zoo is open for visitors all the year round except 25 December.
