The Plaza Catholic Church at El Pueblo was built in December 1822. Also known as La Placita Church is still an active Roman Catholic Archdiocese parish in Los Angeles. The church's patron saint is Mary, mother of Jesus and the founding priest was father Luis Gil y Taboada. The church is one of the major historical landmarks of the city of Los Angeles. Having undergone a few renovations, more or less the Plaza Catholic Church is still on its original state since the day it started in 1822. The church also became a sanctuary for refugees during 1980s.
