It is located in University Park, a historic neighborhood in Los Angeles which refers to the University of Southern California. The University is home to Hebrew Union College and Mount St. Mary's College's Doheny campus.

For years, University Park was considered a part of northern end of south Los Angeles. There has been a movement in 1998 to redefine the neighborhood as part of Downtown Los Angeles which was supported by businesses and organizations in the region of University Park and North University Park but up to now the merging possibility of University Park with Downtown Los Angeles remains years away.

Yes, almost 80-85% of the route is still functioning. Most motorists still use this historic route for sightseeing and just to experience passing through it.

It was dub as the historic route because it was removed from the United State Highway System on June 27, 1985 and only a few portions have been designated as a National Scenic Byway of the name "Historic Route 66".
