The Los Angeles Lakers was founded in 1946 as Detroit Gems and joined the NBA in 1948. The Los Angeles is the third franchise of this team. They first begun as the Detroit Gems from 1946-1947, then changed their name to Minneapolis Lakers from 1947-1960 and lastly as Los Angeles Lakers from 1960 until now.
