The team won 16 championships all in all. They have won 6 championship under the Minneapolis Lakers name in 1948, 1949, 1950, 1952, 1953, and 1954, while 10 with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1972, 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, and recently in 2009.

The latest four winnings were under the team captain Kobe Bryant and the head coach Phil Jackson. The 2000, 2001 and 2002 consecutive wins for the Lakers was mainly because of the Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant tandem.

When the team was unable to get the 2003 championship O'Neal got traded to Miami Heat during the offseason draft pick. It was also became the first step of the team's rebuilding stage. And in 2009 with only Kobe Bryant and Coach Phil Jackson to lead the team they once again got the championship title.
