The City of Claremont is known as the "City of Trees and PhDs" because of its large numbers of trees and residents with doctorates. It is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
Claremont is known for its seven higher-education institutions, lined trees and historic buildings. It was rated as the fifth best place to live in the United States by CNN/Money magazine in July 2007 and was also listed as the highest rated place in California.
The seven schools of higher education include Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Scripps College, Keck Graduate Institute, Pitzer College and Claremont Graduate University.
