The official founding date of the city was on the 4th of September 1781. That was according to Governor Felipe de Neve's written message as his report to pueblo's juridical foundation. It was when the first settlers, the 44 Pobladores were gathered and escorted by soldiers and padres from the mission at San Gabriel Mission.

The San Gabriel Mission or Mission San Gabriel Arcangel is a Roman Catholic mission and a historic landmark in San Gabriel, California which was founded September 8, 1771. San Gabriel Arcangel is often referred to as the "Godmother of the Pueblo of Los Angeles".
