The name Outfest was first use in 1994 but it was founded in 1982 under the "Gay and Lesbian Media Festival and Conference" name. They've been doing the festival for 27 years, showcasing the film and artistry involving lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. The Outfest gives 16 categories "Outie" awards for the finalist.

Pitzer began their mixed gender dorm rooms in the fall of 2008. It is among around fifty schools across the U.S. schools that has this housing choice for their students. Other schools include UC Berkeley, UC Riverside, Stanford, Dartmouth, Cornell, Haverford, Sarah Lawrence, University of Michigan, and Wesleyan.

Majority of the schools discourage couples from participating in the program. According to the schools, only one to three percent of the students living on the campus choose a roommate of the opposite sex.
