What is the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is the peace treaty that ended the two-year Mexican-American War in 1846. With this treaty, made California a United States territory since it was under the Mexican jurisdiction after years ruled by Spain.

The treaty was largely decreed and commanded by the United States to provide for the Mexican Cession to the United States, which is now the southwestern United States, in exchange for millions of dollars.

This also ensured the safety of the pre-existing property rights of Mexican citizens. After 2 years, the County of Los Angeles was established as one of the 27 original counties of California.
